Reviewed in Japan on August 10, 2015

Pure Joy by Hario!

I read many reviews on here praising this item's ability to make cold brew coffee. This is just not the case. We used this for 3 weeks and made 5 different batches of cold brew coffee. Each time the coffee came out watery. I used James Hoffmann's suggested ratio of 65 grams of coffee to 1000 mL of water (I used 80 grams of coffee to 1200 mL in testing). The problem is that the basket does not go down deep enough into the water. If you only put 1000 mL of water, the coffee is barely topped by the water and is not able to soak as well. I used 65 grams of coffee in that test. In the next tests, I added 200 mL to raise the level and increased the coffee to 80 grams, but it still was having trouble brewing a strong pot of coffee. I would even try pouring the coffee into a pyrex measuring cup and then run it back in over the grounds, trying to extract more flavor. One design flaw I have issue with is the lid. It is not designed to form a seal to the basket. After brewing the coffee, you must take out the basket or else the water will lift up some grounds as you pour and dump them in your cup or the carafe itself. I am ordering a different type of cold brew container and will update later once we try it out.

Excellent quality product that makes a good amount of cold brew coffee. This is supposed to be for cold brew tea but works great for coffee as well. The instructions are in Japanese but the pictures are pretty much all you need to figure out how to make cold brew coffee. I made sure I ground the coffee course, filled the coffee holder/filter to about 3/4 full, filled half-way with water, placed the coffee holder/filter into the carafe and poured water over the coffee until the coffee grounds were immersed. I then let the carafe sit on the kitchen counter for a few hours. About once an hour I partially lifted out the coffee holder/filter to let the water drain out then reimmersed the coffee grounds. Before I went to bed I placed the carafe with the coffee grounds into the refrigerator over night. The next morning I pulled the coffee holder/filter and placed in the sink to drain. After the grounds had drained for about 5 minutes I threw them in the trash because coffee grounds can be very hard on garbage disposals. One of the great features I haven't seen in previous reviews of this product is that the bottom of the coffee holder/filter comes off with a quarter twist making it very easy to dispose of coffee grounds or tea leaves preventing residual grounds or leaves staying in the holder and possibly damaging the holder.

I love Japanese bottled tea. Due to COVID-19, my online Japanese grocery store suspended to take orders. Unfortunately, US bottled green teas are not flavorful at all. So I decided to make my own cold-brew green tea. This product is a life saver. It is easy to use, and so easy to clean - the bottom of the basket comes off. I use the used green tea leaves in the fridge to take out any smells and then throw them to the compost! I also make barley tea - a must-have for the summer. As for the green tea, I am still trying to determine the amount of green tea leaves to use for my taste. Highly recommended!

I see that they also changed the description to say that it replaces the TEAPOT filter, but I still love this one better for coffee. This screen works so much better that I am buying another one. We have two coffee makers- one is used for caffeine and the other is for decaf. What a great screen this is!There is not any more residue in the coffee than with the solid bottomed screen. It flows down so quickly that it makes the job much faster than before. I use this exclusively for cold brew coffee and I absolutely love it. I’ve had one for almost 3 years and just bought a second one so we could brew cold coffee batches longer and in rotation. It is supremely easy to use and easy to clean. It took a while to find the right balance of coffee to water but once I found my preference, haven’t looked back. (I prefer my cold brew from home to blue bottle or joe.) I recommend starting too strong and working back from there to find the point where it’s too weak. My pref is to grind enough to loosely fill the basket just below where the mesh ends. I probably brew with too much coffee but unless you’re making a giant bucket of cold brew, that’s inevitable. When I first got it, I was worried it’d be too fragile because it’s glass, and thin glass at that, but it’s held up fine.

When I found out we could make our own cold brew coffee with this thing, I was super pumped to try it out. After using it for a month or so now, I can honestly say it completely honestly changed the way we drink coffee in our house. I used to brew a pot of hot coffee every morning but now we barely use our old coffee maker. Each night, I put 4-5 scoops of coffee grounds into the strainer thingy, fill it up, put it in the fridge and voila, delicious cold brew coffee is waiting for me in the morning. We used to use a lot of creamer to make our hot coffee taste better, but with cold brew, you really don't even need creamer. The coffee tastes significantly better, without any extra flavoring. Don't spend $10 for cold brew coffee at Trader Joes or Starbucks - make your own with this!

Fantastic teapot! I use it for cold-brew coffee, and makes endlessly perfect cups. Size is good for about 3 doses, er, cups, at least in the size I drink (16oz Contigo, 3-4 ice cubes, splash of soy, packet of tuvia, drop of vanilla syrup). I've been trying to break myself of my calorie-laden mochas for a long time, and this has been the perfect enabler. When full, the first time you lift it, the handle may give you worry, but it's plenty sturdy. The reusable filter and easy-twist-to-empty bottom will pay for itself many times over. Buy with confidence.

Love this extra filter, which I purchased for making tea or coffee in my Hario cold brew coffee maker. However, with the fine screen on the bottom of the filter that screws on and off, I like to use it with the cold brew coffee maker to make it easier to moisten the coffee grounds in the 1000ml size. This filter is the same exact size as the one for the 600 ml and the 1000 ml Hario cold brew coffee makers, so it is interchangeable.

I’ve used this every day since I got it. The feature I really like the most is the ability to unscrew the bottom of the filter to make it easier to clean out. I’ve used both tea in loose leaf form as well as bagged form. To create different flavors with plain teas I’ve added about a cup of mashed fruit to the filter after the tea has been made and let it sit for a few hours. Again, the ability to unscrew the bottom of the filter made the clean up easier and everything can go right into my compost bin. It’s a win-win for me.
